Penny Ann Budgen

Life Coach, Oxford

Hi, I’m Penny Ann Budgen,
life coach and mentor.
Based in Oxfordshire I help men & women to uncover what they really want from life and how best to achieve it.

Throughout my working life as headteacher of my own early years schools, as a Probation Officer and Restorative Justice practitioner and as a Life Coach, I have come to realise that the key to successfully handling many of life’s challenges and changes is to have confidence in our own good judgement and our capacity to apply and adapt ourselves creatively.

The coaching process helps us look at situations, ourselves and our relationships objectively. This allows us to see things in perspective and a broader context.

From this vantage point its much easier to understand and accommodate different points of view and to manage our own according to what matters most to us and what we want to achieve/change.

I can help you find what really matters to you, to get clarity and prioritise, to engage your own strengths and resourcefulness, to negotiate any obstacles and choose your best steps forward…with confidence.

TARGETED COACHING

For those times when specific issues need speedy resolution. Skilful use of questioning and the coaching process quickly nails down what’s going on, what matters most and what needs tackling first and foremost. Top of the head answers to…. for example: What do you want to get at? What’s behind the issue? What are the obstacles? Who else is involved? What could you do if there were no constraints? And so on. Once you’ve opened it up, the picture just gets bigger and the options for solutions appear! Then it’s just a matter of prioritising and double-checking. Job done. Speedy, streamlined coaching can be satisfying and energising! It gets there fast… and much more effectively than sweating it out alone!

CRISIS MANAGEMENT

Things coming at us ‘out of the blue’ can be overwhelming. Sometimes for no apparent reason, just a random emotional response or we’ve been here before and it feels like groundhog day, which can intensify the sense of crisis! Sometimes it’s a new humdinger of an issue and we’ve no idea how to manage it for the best! Either and all need attending to, as a matter of self-respect and for the best outcomes for all parties. So, we know we need clarity and objectivity for the best decisions and solutions. We know we can’t or don’t want to just ditch it or long-grass it. Ultimately running it by someone else is where we end up and sharing it with a coach can be one of the best options. Rationalising issues, re-constructing and re-framing them can help gain insight into what matters most to us and to other people. This brings a sense of perspective and control over the situation from where we gain confidence in our own judgement and choices…. And then we’re all set to move forward!

PROBLEM SOLVING

Whether it’s getting to the root of the matter or starting with a well formulated goal, the coaching process provides a safe and flexible framework for all ’problem’ solving! You can choose to really take things apart, scrutinise the issues, think in and ‘outside the box’, generate all kinds of options and commit to one great strategy, and even re-start if needs be! Or you can lay the problem on the table and let the process take you and it from A to Z without looking back, if that’s what suits! All in all it’s a very satisfying thorough route to the best solution.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

This is for when you KNOW (or feel like you do!) you want to grow! You feel like it’s time to move forward in life and want to take charge of your next steps in the best possible way.
Getting coached on these occasions can really help boost the process. Just establishing where you’ve been, what you’ve collected and accrued along the way provides a platform for change. Recalling what you did the last time you were in a similar situation, what worked and what didn’t work, what you really want and what really matters to you right now, what will that look like, how will you know you’ve got there?, ….. all opens up the mind and provides great material to think creatively. And once you’ve checked your own readiness and desire to move forward you can really commit to your best strategy for doing so, with confidence. And you can take it away with you!

RELATIONSHIPS

Our day to day relationships, and our approaches to them often need appraising and re-calibrating. After all we are all changing all the time! Sometimes we can feel completely at sea and tossed about by wind and weather, other times we can just acknowledge a minor difference. Either way it’s good to take hold of the wheel and check co-ordinates! It often helps to appraise ourselves first, to see where we’re coming from and examine, even a little, the whys and wherefores of our own thinking and beliefs. What are they? Have they changed? If we stand right back and look at the setting and context for this/these relationships what do we see? A good set of questions that stimulate thinking and self-analysis can work wonders on how we perceive ourselves and others. Often just what’s needed to nudge us into greater knowledge and understanding too navigate and plot our course for the next bit of the voyage!

RESTORATIVE COACHING

This is about getting things back on track. It’s really useful when different parties are at odds in their understanding of a shared situation, due often to psycho/social obstacles such as unconscious biases, cultural or gendered norms and expectations etc. BUT all parties want to acknowledge they have the same goal: To work and learn better together and share joint achievements. The restorative process starts by finding agreement on what really matters to each party, establishing the common goal and confirming individual levels of commitment to said goal. Each party is asked to consider and make personal notes on how much achieving this goal matters to them personally. Once common commitment is reached, the coaching process moves rapidly to examining the present reality, negotiating obstacles, generating loads of options including wild ones and prioritising the best for achieving the common goal. The beauty of this small group experience is that it allows all parties to expose their thoughts, feelings and beliefs in a safe place, if they want to.

Working Together

The Process

THE PROCESS

Working collaboratively face to face, via Zoom or over the phone, we explore your reality, what you want to achieve, where you are right now, what you’ve already done, what might be holding you back, and what are your best options to move forward. The life coaching process works as well for single, speedy focussed sessions as it does for any series of sessions.

What To Expect

WHAT TO EXPECT

As a professional life coach, I am certified and accredited by the Association for Coaching. My coaching focuses on the positive, the personal and the present. Unlike some other forms of client-centred support, that can dwell on what’s gone ‘wrong’, my approach is dynamic, facilitative, and evidence-based. I strive to encourage and inspire you with your own experience and resourcefulness!

How can I justify the cost?
By having an initial chat with me you can make sure coaching is for you and so worth doing. The key thing about coaching is that its practical, process-driven and solution focussed. A good coach works with what the client really wants and knows about themselves and facilitates their best moves in the best way for them, quickly!
Is Life Coaching for me?
Let’s look at what coaching isn’t. It is NOT therapy, counselling, mentoring, consultancy or treatment. If you want to be in charge of what happens next in your life and are looking for someone to motivate, encourage and help you find what YOU want, faster than doing so alone, then coaching is for you.
What kind of people do you work with?
Anyone who decides they want coaching, for example:
